How to Remodel a Kitchen Cheap: A Chicagoland Guide

If you're set on a stone look, consider it for a smaller footprint — like an island only — while using a more economical material elsewhere.

Don't Underestimate Demo and Disposal Costs

Homeowners often budget for the new kitchen and forget about the cost of removing the old one. In older Chicagoland homes, this can include dealing with plaster walls, older wiring, or flooring layers that have built up over decades. Get a clear number for demo and haul-away before you finalize your budget — surprises here are common and avoidable with a proper walkthrough.

Keep the Footprint, Change the Feel

Many suburban municipalities in Cook and DuPage County require permits for kitchen remodels that involve electrical, plumbing, or structural changes — even if you're not moving walls. Skipping required permits to save time or money is a real risk: it can create problems when you sell the home, and it can affect insurance claims down the line. A reputable contractor will handle this for you and build realistic timelines around it, rather than treating it as an afterthought.

Where Not to Cut Corners

There are a few places where cutting costs tends to cost more later:

  • Electrical and plumbing work should always be done to code, by licensed professionals. This isn't the place to save a few dollars.
  • Ventilation matters more in our climate than people expect. A kitchen without proper exhaust can lead to moisture issues, especially during humid Chicago summers.
  • Waterproofing around sinks and dishwashers is inexpensive to do right the first time and expensive to fix after water damage sets in.
